Abu Dhabi has once again hosted the world's foremost endocrinologists and diabetes specialists as ESE Clinical Update (ECU) returned to the UAE capital for the third time this past weekend.
More than 130 of the region's healthcare specialists joined leading voices, Professors Philippe Bouchard and Karim Meeran, alongside a host of international expert speakers. The event is part of ICLDC's Education Series and was jointly coordinated by ICLDC and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE).
During the two day programme, Professor Bouchard highlighted some of the latest advances in the treatment of the menopause. The menopause is generally experienced by all women, usually during their late forties or early fifties as the menstrual cycle prepares to end.
The menopause, also colloquially known as 'the change', can come with more than 30 very active symptoms, and a variety of supporting treatments are available.
Professor Bouchard stressed the need to ensure women are fully informed of what to expect during this period, known as peri-menopause, which can last up to five years, bringing a variety of physical, and emotional symptoms in its wake.
He also stressed the need to give guidance on how to manage the experiences, and about the treatment choices available. He confirmed that the risk of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer must be checked before any treatment is prescribed or started.
According to Meeran, who is Professor of Endocrinology at Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of ICLDC‟s Medical Board, the menopause is one of many fresh, timely subjects that have been addressed as part of the clinical update.
"Any new research on the treatment of menopause is vitally important to share with our healthcare practitioners as it affects almost all women, and thus generally around half of a population.
"Indeed, ECU 2015 has delivered the most up-to-date thinking on a wide range of endocrine issues. Early feedback confirms that participants have gained new insight into the latest diagnosis and treatments available to immediately support their daily practice, here in the UAE and further afield."
Delegates at ECU 2105 represented practices across three continents, and Professor Meeran added that networking between trainees and experienced endocrinologists had been excellent. He advised that the programme was designed to maximise interaction through numerous workshops structured to facilitate discussion.
Other world experts who attended the 2015 event alongside ESE's President Professor Philippe Bouchard, included Professor Peter Trainer from the UK, Professor Lars Rejnmark from Denmark, Professor Donal O'Shea from Ireland and Professor Jens Bollerslev from Norway.
