ICLDC’s Walk 2013 Participants Set To Take 60m Steps Next Friday Register online for next weekend’s Walkathon at Yas Marina Circuit for your chance to win A Walk Of A Lifetime
As Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) readies for its annual walkathon this weekend, both facilities
in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have turned blue to join more than 1,000 buildings around the world in support of the International Diabetes Federation’s World Diabetes Day (on November 14).
ICLDC is taking part in this global initiative for the seventh year running throwing the spotlight on blue as the symbolic colour for use in all diabetes awareness campaigns in the company of destination icons such as the London Eye, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and Toronto’s CN Tower. The collective effort is a signal to communities worldwide that a 30-minute brisk walk every day, combined with a balanced diet, are all it takes to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to manage or even prevent diabetes.
This message is also carried by ICLDC’s Walk 2013, scheduled for next weekend – Friday November 15 at Yas Marina Circuit.
This year the event’s already-proven appeal is boosted by a fresh new promotion encouraging online registration with the chance to win two tickets to an Etihad destination of choice, plus Dhs 10,000 spending money.
According to event organisers, the Walk of a Lifetime promo puts the event on track to gather a bumper crowd of more than 17,000 people all eager to pace the circuit and place the spotlight on making regular exercise a daily practice.
Walk 2013, supported by ActiveLife from Daman, is a part of ICLDC's award-winning public health awareness campaign, Diabetes-Knowledge-Action, under the patronage of Her Higness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.
Over the past months, the campaign has rolled out a host of mini-walks across the UAE with more than four million steps already been taken by schools and organisations who have stepped up in support of Start Walking., the exciting new grassroots community initiative.
Meanwhile, it is mooted that more than 60 million steps could be added to the tally on Friday as walkers choose between a three kilometre (3km) or five kilometre (5km) route.
