Medical specialists attending Imperial College London Diabetes Centre’s (ICLDC) inaugural Advanced Diabetes Conference added more than 50,000 steps to the centre’s nationwide grassroots initiative Start Walking.

The delegates, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists, joined Karim Meeran, Professor of Endocrinology, Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of ICLDC’s Medical Board in a 10-minute walk around the centre immediately after the main session.

Earlier this year, Start Walking. was launched by ICLDC’s public health awareness campaign, Diabetes-Knowledge-Action in a drive to get the UAE walking more, already resulting in a host of activities across Abu Dhabi such as ‘Mini-walks’ and ‘Take The Stairs Day’, with around participants already notching up more than 800,000 steps.

Meanwhile, conference Chairman, Her Excellency Professor Maha Taysir Barakat, Director General, Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) stressed the important role of exercise in the management of diabetes. She said that the key to good health is as simple and as smart as managing a balanced diet and taking regular exercise.
