Imperial College London Diabetes Centre Take a Step for Diabetes social media campaign picks up the pace around the globe.
Six-time USA National Basketball Association champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has offered his support to one of the biggest social media campaigns in the country. The Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) #Walk2014 campaign is aimed to encourage people to take steps to combat diabetes by leading active lifestyles. Participants can enter the campaign’s competition by posting a “shoefie” of themselves walking with the #Walk2014. The top entrees will get a chance to meet Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at an autograph signing session at Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday, 28th October.
Showing his support for the cause, Abdul-Jabbar posted a “shoefie” of himself taking a step for diabetes on his official twitter page. He nominated key digital influencers in the UAE to also take a step for diabetes including Kris Fade and Brent Black, morning and afternoon radio show hosts of Virgin Radio, Dubai’s top radio station; and Mohamed Al Otaiba, editor in chief of The National UAE, the country’s English daily newspaper.
With the power of social media, all four have quickly responded positively to the challenge stating:
“Challenge accepted @kaj33! Yallah, UAE! Take a step with me for #diabetes at #Walk2014” Virgin Radio presenter Kris Fade tweeted.
“You’re on @kareemabduljabbar_33! I will #fightdiabetes with a step at #Walk2014,” posted by Brent Black on Instagram.
Mohammed Al Otaiba posted, “Thanks for the nomination @kareemabduljabbar_33 @kaj33! #TheNationalUAE supports #healthyliving! We will definitely be at #Walk2014.”
The basketball legend will be in the capital of the United Arab Emirates on 28 October to officially launch the “ICLDC Take a Step for Diabetes Week with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” in support of the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) Walk 2014. The week of activities will include an autograph signing session during Train Yas at the Yas Marina Circuit for winners of the #Walk2014 social media competition and a visit to ICLDC headquarters in Abu Dhabi. In Al Ain, Abdul-Jabbar will speak at a selected school followed by a walk at Al Ain Municipality.
