His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Saeed bin Saif Al Nahyan applauded Play for Life – Football 2014 for playing a crucial part in the UAE’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle as he returned for second time in a week to present Takreer with the Champions’ Trophy (Thursday March 27).

His Highness - who kicked off the five-night tournament for corporate football teams on Sunday - was accompanied by Imperial College London Diabetes Centre’s (ICLDC) Carol Sansour Dabdoub. ICLDC is the organiser of Football 2014.

Champs, Takreer beat seven-time participant, Mubadala two goals to one (2-1). They secured their place in the final against Mubadala after seeing off ADSC two goals to one (2-1) in the semi.

ActiveLife played hard to keep Mubadala away from the cup (1-2), giving them a run for their money, but eventually going home empty handed themselves after ADSC gave them a six goal thrashing in the Third Place Match (0-6).

It’s second tourney win for Takreer, also the 2012 Cup Champions. Theyplayed a hard and fast final chalking up two goals that proved to be enough for them to keep the cup out of the hands of tournament stalwarts, Mubadala (2-1). It was the closest Mubadala has got to taking the cup home in the seven years that they have supported the tournament.

Meanwhile, in a bumper night, Takreer also produced the Man of the Tournament, Faisal Al Badi. Mubadala’s James Hussy was crowed the best goalie. This year’s top goal scorer is SEHA’s Ahmed Najeeb who placed 12 goals into the net over the five nights of play. SEHA also carried home the tournament’s new trophy, the Play for Life Fair Play Award, measured by the least number of cards, as well as a sterling display of good team spirit.

Play for Life - Football 2014 is part of ICLDC’s public health awareness campaign, ‘Diabetes-Knowledge-Action’ under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.
